Dyno Tuning
Dyno tuning greatly reduces the time it takes to troubleshoot any bike issues. A problem that occurs on the road can often be duplicated during a test drive on the dyno. This allows a quick measure, record and diagnosis of performance problems. Our system will accurately reproduce road or race situations. This eliminates having to pay a shop mechanic to spend hours trying to diagnose a problem bike. Dyno graphs will show real time data made by any changes, like exhaust, air filter, chains, spark plugs, and even engine oil brands/weights, confirming performance changes and effectiveness of products.
Baseline
- Dyno Runs x 3
- Printout for bike owner to keep, showing dyno verified horsepower and torque curves, as well as the air/fuel ratio.
STAGE 1 TUNE
- Baseline Dyno Runs x 3
- Install downloadable map
- Verify performance is within parameters with dyno

Stage 2 Tune
- Baseline Dyno Runs x 3
- Install downloadable map
- Map adjustments to Power Commander to ensure no extreme lean or rich conditions for improved power and throttle response
- Verify improvements with dyno
- Printout for bike owner to keep, showing dyno verified horsepower and torque curves, as well as the air/fuel ratio.
Stage 3 Tune
- Baseline Dyno Runs x 3
- Produce new custom map that covers all RPM and all throttle positions
- Confirm air-fuel ratio is within 12.8-13.2, which creates the best throttle response, horsepower, as well as improved fuel economy and longer engine life
- Verify improvements with dyno
- Printout for bike owner to keep, showing dyno verified horsepower and torque curves, as well as the air/fuel ratio.
A baseline run costs $80.00 (three dyno runs or “pulls”) and includes a printed-out dyno graph. The file will be kept on our computer for any future tuning wanted by the customer. Dyno-tuning a motorcycle is between $240 and $700 for most motorcycles with a Dynojet Power Commander system already installed. If we are doing the installation, the cost differs by bike. Lightspeed Dyno Service is an authorized Dynojet dealer and can get you the best price on Dynojet Power Commanders and other products.
For Best Tuning Results:
Before your bike arrives for tuning, make sure the following has been addressed to help ensure a good quality fuel map:
MAINTENANCE IS UP TO DATE –
- VALVE clearances in proper adjustment. Tight valves can cause low compression, a poor mapping condition.
- AIR FILTER is clean. If we build a map on a dirty air filter, when you clean it, your engine will flow more air and your map will be off.
- FRESH ENGINE OIL. We will be running your engine through every throttle position and rpm available; you’ll want all your oils anti wear additives working properly.
- SPARK PLUGS should be known to be in good condition.
FUEL MANAGEMENT INSTALLED PROPERLY – Have a mechanic or someone with experience install the Power Commander.
CHAIN/SPROCKETS – make sure they are in good condition. A worn-out chain can cause inaccuracy in dyno readings.
These are the basic issues that we run across the most. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to call/email and ask. We are here to give you the best product and looking out for your best interest.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Dynamometer (dyno)?
A dynamometer is a machine that can measure the torque, horsepower and air to fuel ratio of the motorcycle throughout the load and RPM Range.
Dyno tuning is not only for race and track bikes, but also for any motorcycle. If you simply want a smoother running engine, better MPG, or you’re looking for maximum power, then dyno tuning your bike is the way to go.
Most modifications to a motorcycle will change how the engine breathes (how fuel and air flow into the engine). Dyno tuning helps make sure that your engine fueling is adjusted for those changes so they don’t reduce engine reliability or longevity.
Why do I need dyno tuning?
Whether you’ve modified your bike or just got it fresh from the factory, custom tuning on a dynamometer can significantly improve the performance of your engine.
Anytime you modify or upgrade your bike, you’re changing how your engine breathes—how fuel and air flow into the engine. Dyno tuning helps make sure that your engine adjusts to those changes so they don’t interfere with your riding experience.
But even when you haven’t touched a thing, your motorcycle still may not perform as well as it could because modern manufacturing standards prioritize emissions control over power and performance. Almost all bikes are programmed to run lean.
How long does the process take?
The length of the tuning process depends on several factors, but it will normally take anywhere from 4-8 hours. If you’re bringing in your motorcycle for a full tune, plan to leave it for the day.
